Toubkal is the headline, but it is only one of many outstanding treks in the High Atlas. If you want fewer crowds, deeper contact with Amazigh (Berber) village life, or a multi-day route with a real sense of remoteness, look at the Toubkal Circuit, the M'goun Massif, the Ait Bouguemez valley and the lower village treks around Imlil, Ourika and Amizmiz. This guide compares the best options and helps you choose.

Lengths and difficulty are typical ranges. We tailor every route to your group.
1. Toubkal Circuit (5 to 7 days)
The circuit takes you around the Toubkal massif, crossing high passes, valleys and remote hamlets, and can include the Toubkal summit. It gives you the scenery of Toubkal with far fewer people, and you spend nights in village guesthouses and mountain huts. Typical highlights include the Mizane and Tacheddirt valleys, high passes and wide views. This is a good choice for people who want a real multi-day trek with a summit option.
2. M'goun Massif (5 to 8 days)
The M'goun Massif in the Central High Atlas rises to over 4,000 metres and is one of Morocco's wildest trekking areas. The M'goun Circuit crosses remote valleys and high plateaus, and usually passes through Ait Bouguemez. It is quieter, harder to reach, and more demanding, so it is best for experienced trekkers who want solitude. Expect simple village accommodation and long days.
3. Ait Bouguemez, the Happy Valley (2 to 5 days)
Ait Bouguemez is a broad, green valley of terraced fields, mud-brick villages and walnut trees, often called the Happy Valley. Walking here is gentler than around Toubkal and is perfect for a slower trip focused on village life, hospitality and landscape. It works well as a stand-alone trek or as a start point for M'goun. It is much quieter than the Imlil area.
4. Imlil village treks (1 to 3 days)
If you do not want to climb high, the villages around Imlil offer beautiful day walks: Aroumd, Tamatert, Tacheddirt and viewpoints above the valley. You can sleep in a guesthouse or a gite, eat traditional meals, and walk with a local guide. This is ideal for families, beginners and anyone who wants the mountains without the summit effort.
5. Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma (1 to 3 days)
The Ourika Valley is the easiest escape from Marrakech, with riverside paths, waterfalls near Setti Fatma, and village walks. In spring the valley is green, and in autumn it is quieter. It is also a good base for a short trek or for combining culture and walking.
6. Amizmiz and the western High Atlas (1 to 3 days)
The Amizmiz area, about 60 km south of Marrakech, offers a different feel: local markets, olive groves, Amazigh villages and valleys that few tourists visit. It is perfect if you want authentic village life and gentle trekking away from the main trails. Day treks can be linked to Marrakech, and longer routes can climb toward higher ridges.
How to choose your High Atlas trek
- You want the summit: Toubkal 2 or 3 days, or the Toubkal Circuit.
- You want solitude and a challenge: M'goun Massif.
- You want culture and gentle walking: Ait Bouguemez, Imlil villages, or Amizmiz.
- You have only one or two days from Marrakech: Ourika, Imlil or Amizmiz treks.
- You are trekking with children or older relatives: village treks with mule support.
Respecting the mountains and the villages
- Dress modestly in villages and ask before taking photos of people.
- Carry out all your rubbish.
- Buy local: eat in guesthouses, shop in village stores, and tip guides and muleteers fairly.
- Greet people. A simple salam goes a long way.
